Learning the basics to making a movie

Our task was to make a short film called ‘the Meeting’. We had to focus on the conventions of movie making and how to edit the footage properly. We started the piece with a wide establishing shot to show the viewer where the action is going to take place. We had to remember to use the 180 degrees rule so that the viewer didn’t think the people talking had switched places. This is a technique in with the camera does not pass an imaginary line going through the people talking. I was filming and often I would shot the same bit over and over again so I could have the scene from different angle.
Once we were done filming we all had to edit our work and then show the rest of the class. To edit we used iMovie. I found it quite easy because I use it at home and know what to do. When we were analysing our work we found that sometimes the shots were too long, giving the scene a very slow and boring pace. We learnt that still shots shouldn’t be much longer than five seconds if you what to keep your viewers attention. It is also important to use a tripod as much as possible; if you don’t it can make the viewer feel a bit sick or dizzy. It’s also important not to zoom in and out too much because it’s pointless. Instead you should just cut to a close up.

We started the new media course on the 21st June. We are going to have to make a movie trailer advertising a new horror movie. It is important to consider the conventions of horror movie trailer and how we might want to challenged them. We are going to work in groups of three or four. Everyone is going to have a chance to directed, edit, storyboard and perform in the trailer. We are each going to keep our own blogs to show the process.
